CHIEF ENGINEER
Minimum age: Adult
Education: High school diploma or GED
Experience: 5 yrs. or hold Chief Marine Engineer License issued by the
U.S. Coast Guard for recip. issue*
Examination: Written (Oral or practical when necessary)

1ST CLASS ENGINEER

Stationary Engineer License or First Assistant
Marine Engineer License issued by the U.S. Coast Guard for
reciprocal issue
Examination: Written (Oral or practical when necessary)
Minimum time in previous grade: 1 yr
Maximum engine or turbine horsepower requiring
licensed power engineer unsupervised: 7,500 hp.
Maximum boiler horsepower requiring
licensed power engineer unsupervised: 1,500 bhp.- Unlimited LP
Maximum refrigeration tonnage requiring
licensed power engineer unsupervised: 5,000 tons

* An examination must be taken to obtain a Chief Engineer License regardless of the
license you may already hold.
2ND CLASS ENGINEER
Minimum age: 20
Education: High school or GED
Experience: 3 yrs. or hold State of Ohio Second Class
Stationary Engineer License or Second Assistant Marine
Engineer License issued by the U.S. Coast Guard for
reciprocal issue
Examination: Written (Oral or practical when necessary)
Minimum time in previous grade: 1 yr
Maximum engine or turbine horsepower requiring
licensed power engineer unsupervised: 2,500 hp.
Maximum boiler horsepower requiring
licensed power engineer unsupervised: 600 bhp - Unlimited LP
Maximum refrigeration tonnage requiring
licensed power engineer unsupervised: 1,000 tons

3RD CLASS ENGINEER
Minimum age: 19
Education: High school, G.E.D. & 6 credit hours of boiler training
Experience: 2 yrs. or hold State of Ohio Third Class
Stationary Engineer License or Third Assistant
Marine Engineer License issued by the U.S. Coast
Guard
Examination: Written (Oral or practical when necessary)
Minimum time in previous grade: 1 yr

licensed power engineer unsupervised: 1,000 hp.

licensed power engineer unsupervised: 300 bhp - Unlimited LP Maximum

4TH CLASS ENGINEER

Experience: 2 yrs. or hold State of Ohio High or Low
Pressure Boiler Operator License or Oiler
or Water Tender License issued by the U.S.
Coast Guard
Examination: Written (Oral or practical when necessary)
Maximum engine or turbine horsepower requiring
licensed power engineer unsupervised: 500 hp.
Maximum boiler horsepower requiring
licensed power engineer unsupervised: L.P. 150 H.P. 25 BHP
Maximum refrigeration tonnage requiring
licensed power engineer unsupervised: 100 tons

NOTE: With 6 hours of an approved classroom training and 2 years experience, this
can constitute the first half of an apprenticeship program.
